A qualitative assessment of the sexual-health education, training and service needs of young adults in Tehran

Abstract Background Sexual Health and Relationships Education (SHRE) provides individuals with knowledge skills to manage risky behaviors take informed decisions protect themselves against STIs, unintended pregnancy. Only minimal SHRE is provided in Iranian schools universities previous research has highlighted needs demands for improved sexual services Iran. This study explored young, adults’ experience of, need health education, training healthcare services, as well their views on how augment improve existing provision. Design methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted a sample of 25 young adults who lived Tehran, Iran had volunteered participate the study. Transcripts analyzed using thematic analysis. Results Participants explained education healthcare. They unanimously expressed dissatisfaction available care barriers gaining information seeking advice healthcare, including lack reliable resources, taboo cultural barriers, trust protected confidentiality. resulted ambiguities misconceptions, those regarding cause transmission STIs correct use contraceptives. recommended improvements, holding mixed-gender extracurricular workshops comprehensive approach relationships education. Conclusions There clear demand provision relevant Tehran. should be addressed empower people make choices avoid behavior.
